Learning outcomes (in Czech)
The course Intercultural Skills is intended for the international students to gain a better understanding of Czech culture, to improve their intercultural skills and to enhance the quality of the learning process. Through theoretical discussions, practical experience in participating in intercultural activities, students will develop the skills needed to communicate and collaborate successfully with individuals from diverse culture background.
Syllabus (in Czech)
  • 1. Subject requirements. Olomouc – a university city (student life, buddy system, orientation in the city, etc.). Useful Czech phrases. Getting to know you.
  • 2. The Czech Republic (location, political system, religion, the capital city, etc.). Czech history, culture, customs, and traditions. Doing business in Czechia.
  • 3. Cultural specifics: comparison of Czech cultural specifics and students’ home country.
  • 4. Introduction to intercultural communication: culture, cultural models, DMIS.
  • 5. Managing first meetings: peach and coconut cultures.
  • 6. Categorisation of cultures according to Richard D. Lewis.
  • 7. Edward Hall: low and high context cultures.
  • 8. Geert Hofstede’s cultural dimensions.
  • 9. Culture clashes: stereotypes, prejudice. National stereotypes.
  • 10.Presenting across cultures.
  • 11.Participation in international activities within MVSO international events.
  • 12.Presenting one’s own culture to Czech students.
