Course objectives
The aim of the course is to prepare the student for the managerial job in small and medium-sized enterprises. The students will get familiar with the basic conditions for doing business in the Czech Republic, particularly focused on SMEs in the context of the EU practice. They will also focus on the specifics of running a small and medium-sized enterprise in the Czech Republic discussed not only from the regional development point of view but also compared not to different foreign countries (in the EU as well as overseas). The next part of the course is based on practical examples and case studies and is focused on business activities of SMEs, their perspectives and threats, then on the network nature of business, especially on strategic alliances and clusters. The course also deals with business on the international markets and the internationalization of business activities of SMEs (not only but especially within the EU, logically linked to their status in the Czech Republic).
Syllabus
  • 1. Introduction to SMEs (what an entrepreneur should know, business and its risks, start-up of an enterprise, business activities of SMEs, their perspectives and threats), business incubators, their creation and importance for potential start-up establishers
    2. Business legislation related to SMEs (Civil Code, Trade Act and other legislative measures)
    3. Theoretical background and context of the regional development and regional evaluation of business environment quality (business, employment, infrastructure, local, price and environmental factors; complex evaluation of business environment quality)
    4. Small and medium-sized business (preincubation phase, starting a business, the fundamentals of SMEs management, the fundamentals of SMEs marketing, the fundamentals of human resource management, the fundamentals of SMEs financial management, demonstration on case studies)
    5. Network nature of business, clusters and cluster initiatives worldwide and in the Czech Republic, clusters and their impact on competitiveness, cluster policy, the process of the establishment and development of clusters
    6. Measuring performance of clusters and cluster initiatives, demonstration on case studies of selected clusters in the Czech Republic and abroad
    7. Globalization and its starting points for European integration, management and administration of companies (Corporate Governance)
    8. Strategy and performance of SMEs - the basis for growth in the value of the company, strategic marketing of SMEs and its role in enhancing the competitiveness of SMEs, financial management in the environment of SMEs and its changes
    9. Business of small and medium-sized enterprises in the Czech Republic, the EU and the USA and their success factors
    10. Membership in professional organizations, its meaning, essence and use in SMEs, franchising, authorized dealers, SMEs business and customs policy, customs warehouses in the Czech Republic - ways of using them for SMEs business, freight forwarding as a form of SMEs business, outsourcing and its application by SMEs
    11. Nonprofit organizations, their meaning and mission, business ethics and its significance for entrepreneurs, CSR in the SMEs sector, lobbying and related activities, corruption as a business handicap (and how to face it)
    12. Business on the international markets and internationalization of business activities and their management in the SMEs sector
    The course is based on the methods of confrontation and paradoxes, brainstorming/brainwriting, participatory methods and simulation methods.
    The lectures will be mostly based on the information-receptive method, especially in the form of lectures with discussions and lectures supported by multimedia.
