The course is offered to students of any study field.
Course objectives
A loose continuation of the course XAKO. The aim of the course English Conversation is to renew and deepen basic students' knowledge and skills in the use of the English language and at the same time also unify students' knowledge and skills so that they are ready for its development in the area of the business English. The content of the course English Conversation involves revision and extension of vocabulary and knowledge of English grammar with an emphasis on practical application in normal social conversational situations in which students may find themselves in private and especially in working life.
Syllabus
  • 1. In an ideal world? (2nd conditional; Describing your dream house).
    2. Still friends? Friendship (Usually and used to; Do you need to 'edit your friends'? (summarizing paragraphs); Talking about friendship).
    3. Slow down (Noun formation; Quantifiers; Slow food and Slow city).
    4. Same planets, different worlds (Connectors; A/an, the, no article; A man thing or a woman thing?).
    5. Job swap (Gerunds and infinitives; The right job for you; Communication: test your memory).
    6. Love in the supermarket. Shopping (Reported speech: statements, questions, and commands; Making a complaint: is it worth it? Communication: I want to speak to the manager).
    7. See the film? get on a plane. Cinema (Passive (be + past participle); Famous films that moved us (literally!); The cinema questionnaire).
    8. I need a hero (Relative clauses: defining and non-defining clauses; Heroes and icons of our time).
    9. Can we make our own luck? (Third conditional; Making adjectives and adverbs; Bad luck? Good luck? Speaking: How lucky are you?).
    10. Murder mysteries (Question tags, indirect questions; Compound nouns; Jack the Ripper - case closed? Interview with the detective).
    11. Switch it off. Television (Phrasal verbs; Your TV habits; Revise and check).
    Revision - vocabulary, grammar, social English, reading and comprehension check.
