Course objectives
This course introduces students to the field of information technologies. Students get basic overview in computer hardware and software.
Syllabus
  • Tutorials:
    1. Introduction, abstraction. Representation and interpretation of information. Encoding of numbers and text in memory.
    2. Basic principles of computers. Von Neumenn architecture - CPU, memory, I/O devices. Computer generations - historic models, trends, parallelism, supercomputing, special purpose computers.
    3. CPU and microprocessor. Characteristics, registers, instructions. High level programming languages. Intel and ARM computers. Mainboard. Bus, interrupt.
    4. Demonstration of computer hardware. Internal and external memory. ROM, RAM.
    5. Hard disk. CD and other optical disks. Flash disk. Physical structure of a disk. Other peripherals: graphics card and display, keyboard, mouse, printer.
    6. More peripherals: Sound card, network adapter, modem. Computer case. Server components: RAID, rack, UPS.
    7. Introduction to operating systems.
    8. Operating systems: Windows family, Unix family.
    9. Application software. Web browsers, text editors, spreadsheets, database systems, graphics editors. Installation of oftware.
    10. Software licences, copyright, free software.
