- Course objectives
- The course introduces students to computer hardware and operating systems as managers of that hardware and basic software in computers. The course also briefly covers application software, software licenses and copyright.
- Syllabus
- 1. Abstraction. Representation and interpretation of information. One's and zero's, Boolean logic. Encoding of numbers and characters in computers.
2. Von Neumann architecture - processing unit, operating memory, I/O devices. Generations and types of computers - historic models, current trends, parallelism, supercomputers, special purpose computers.
3. CPU and microprocessor. Characteristics, types of processors, registers, instructions. Higher programming languages. Concrete processors (Intel and others). Computer mainboard. Bus, interrupts. BIOS.
4. Internal and external memories. ROM, RAM. Hard drive. CD and other optical drives. Flash disks. Physical structure of hard drives.
5. Other peripherals: graphic cards and display, keyboard, mouse, printer, sound card, network interface card, modem. Computer case, power supply unit.
6. Server extensions: RAID, rack, uninterruptible power supply.
7. Introduction to operating systems. Windows family. Unix family.
8. Operating system principles: processor management, operating memory management, disk management, file systems, external memory.
9. Application software. Web browsers, text editors, spreadsheets, database systems, graphic editors. Installation of software.
10. Software licenses, copyright, free software.
